General Questions About Driver CPC

What is Driver CPC

Driver CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence. It’s a qualification that professional bus, coach, and lorry drivers must hold in addition to their vocational driving licence. It’s designed to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving.

Most drivers who drive HGV over 3.5 tonnes or PCV with 9 seats or more for a living need a Driver CPC. There are some exemptions, which we’ll cover below.

Exemptions exist, such as if you’re driving for non-commercial purposes, carrying material or equipment you use in your job (and driving isn’t your main activity), undergoing driving lessons, or in certain emergency situations. It’s crucial to check the specific DVSA guidelines to ensure you comply.

Driver CPC is valid for 5 years.

If you were to be caught driving professionally without a valid Driver CPC as a driver you could be fined £1000. As an operator allowing a driver to do this you could be called Infront of the Traffic Commissioner for a public enquiry

For new drivers obtaining their Driver CPC qualification for the first time, the DQC card is issued automatically once they pass both the theory and practical tests, including the Module 2 and Module 4 assessments. This card is valid for five years. Within this 5 year period, you must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) to drive a lorry, bus or coach.

National And International Driver CPC

What is a National Driver CPC ?

This is a new, more flexible option introduced for drivers who only drive in the UK.

You must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to maintain it.

An individual National DCPC course is 3.5 hours long. So in a 5 year Period you will have to attend ten, 3.5 hour courses in order to maintain your ability to drive commercially.

Yes. However, lets say you have completed four 7hr courses totalling 28hrs then sit two, 3.5hr courses, you will have a National Drivers CPC. If the final course was a 7hr course bringing you up to 35hrs, then you would have an International Driver CPC. Your previous 28hrs that were 7hr courses would have been accredited for international CPC. But would revert back to National Driver CPC once you sat a 3.5hr course.

This is something we are looking into, If you think that National Driver CPC is something that suites you better get in touch and we will see what we can do.
