Driver CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence. It’s a qualification that professional bus, coach, and lorry drivers must hold in addition to their vocational driving licence. It’s designed to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving.

Most drivers who drive HGV over 3.5 tonnes or PCV with 9 seats or more for a living need a Driver CPC. There are some exemptions, which we’ll cover below.

Exemptions exist, such as if you’re driving for non-commercial purposes, carrying material or equipment you use in your job (and driving isn’t your main activity), undergoing driving lessons, or in certain emergency situations. It’s crucial to check the specific DVSA guidelines to ensure you comply.

Driver CPC is valid for 5 years.

If you were to be caught driving professionally with a valid Driver CPC as a driver you could be fined £1000. As an operator allowing a driver to do this you could be called Infront of the Traffic Commissioner for a public enquiry
